Bear Heaven is a small primitive campground tucked away in the Monongahela National Forest, about 14 miles northeast of Elkins, West Virginia. Located along Forest Road 91 (Stuart Drive) near the Otter Creek Wilderness, this peaceful campground features just eight campsites scattered among impressive rock outcroppings that create a unique and scenic setting. Surrounded by towering trees, massive boulders, and the quiet beauty of the forest, Bear Heaven is the perfect destination for campers seeking a simple, back-to-nature experience. The spacious sites offer plenty of room to relax, while the surrounding landscape invites visitors to explore and appreciate the rugged beauty of this hidden mountain retreat.

Bear Heaven is an excellent base camp for outdoor recreation, with opportunities for both hiking and stream fishing just minutes away. One of the closest trails is Middle Point Trail #140, a 3.7-mile route that begins along Forest Road 91 west of the campground. The trail winds through the forest, offering a peaceful hike surrounded by the sights and sounds of the Monongahela National Forest.

For those seeking a more rugged adventure, the neighboring Otter Creek Wilderness provides access to an extensive network of trails that range from moderate to challenging. Hikers can explore remote backcountry landscapes, cross mountain streams, and experience some of the area’s most pristine wilderness. Although Bear Heaven is a small campground and campsites can fill quickly during busy weekends, its peaceful setting and convenient access to outdoor recreation make it well worth the visit. Open from April through December, this rustic campground offers a true back-to-nature experience without the crowds often found at larger campgrounds.

The campground features spacious campsites that are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so arriving early is recommended, especially during peak seasons. Keep in mind, there is no cell service available. Overnight camping costs $10 per site, though holders of an America the Beautiful Pass can camp for just $5 per night. Payment is made at the self-service station located near the campground entrance.
