Whether you’re sipping your morning coffee while watching the lake come alive or unwinding by the water after a day of exploring, the tranquil setting makes it easy to slow down and appreciate the beauty of West Virginia’s outdoors.

Located within the Sutton Recreation Area, Gerald Freeman Campground is a peaceful lakeside campground managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and open from late May through November. Set along a quiet arm of Sutton Lake where the Holly River flows into the reservoir, the campground offers easy access to the water for fishing, kayaking, and other outdoor adventures. Visitors can also enjoy a variety of recreational opportunities throughout the area, including boating, swimming, hiking, and exploring the scenic beauty that makes Sutton Lake a popular destination for nature lovers.

Gerald Freeman Campground is well-equipped to accommodate a variety of camping styles, from tent campers to large RVs up to 75 feet in length. The campground features 156 campsites, including 113 sites with electric hookups and 37 sites with full hookups offering water, sewer, and electric service. For those seeking a more rustic experience, primitive sites are also available. Some of the most sought-after campsites sit closest to the lake and provide electric service while offering beautiful waterfront views.

The campground’s amenities make for a comfortable stay, with hot showers, flush toilets, drinking water, and two trailer dump stations conveniently located throughout the park. Visitors also have easy access to on-site boat ramps and a marina with a snack bar, making it simple to spend a day on Sutton Lake. Families will appreciate the playgrounds and basketball courts, giving younger campers plenty of opportunities to stay active and entertained during their visit.

If you’re hoping to stay connected during your visit, be prepared to unplug. Cell phone service is extremely limited throughout the campground, and even signal boosters struggle to pull in a reliable connection. I walked all the way to the main road and still couldn’t get any service. Those who need internet access may have better luck with Starlink, which tends to work well in the area. On the plus side, the campground’s shower facilities are known for being clean and well-maintained, and every campsite includes its own fire ring, making it easy to end the day gathered around a campfire beneath the stars.

One of the best parts of my stay was the price. By booking through Recreation.gov and using my America the Beautiful Access Pass, I was able to receive a discount on the nightly camping fee, making an already affordable campground an even better value. Considering my site included electric hookups and direct access to Sutton Lake, I felt like I got a great deal for the experience.
