Perched along the peaceful shoreline of Lake Marion, the Lakeshore Campground at Santee State Park is the kind of place that makes you want to slow down and stay awhile. Tucked on the park’s eastern side, this spacious campground offers beautiful lake views, easy access to outdoor adventures, and plenty of room to spread out. With 108 campsites available for both RV, van life travelers and tent campers, it’s a welcoming spot for everyone—from weekend campers to road-weary wanderers looking for a peaceful place to land. Campfires, lakeside mornings, and endless Carolina skies make this campground a favorite stop for anyone chasing the outdoors.

Located along the shores of Lake Marion, about an hour inland from Charleston, Santee State Park has two separate campgrounds: Lakeshore and Cypress View. The two are spread pretty far apart, giving each area its own unique feel. Lakeshore Campground—the one most often mentioned in reviews—is the park’s older campground. Getting there can be a bit of an adventure. The access road is unpaved and pretty rough in spots, with potholes and bumps that definitely keep you on your toes.
What Lakeshore lacks in smooth roads, it makes up for in atmosphere. The campground sits within a beautiful pine and hardwood forest, giving it a much more natural, wooded feel than many modern campgrounds. Many of the 108 sites sit right along the water, offering easy access to fishing, boating, and peaceful lake views.

Each site is packed with sand and includes water and electric hookups, and also has a fire pit and picnic table. While the park website lists only 30-amp service at some sites, I noticed there is also a 20-amp outlet available. The campground is pet-friendly and provides 4 convenient restroom facilities with hot showers. Additional amenities include a dump station.

Lakeshore is open year-round and offers a mix of shaded and more open campsites. Reservations require a two-night minimum, and campers can book up to 14 days at a time. If you’d like to stay longer, you’ll simply need to switch to another available site. Booking online was quick and easy, and one of the best parts is the simplicity when you arrive—there’s no formal check-in process. Just head straight to your site, set up camp, and start enjoying the lake.

The sites start at $24 per night and can be reserved online up to a day before arrival. There are additional camping areas and rental cabins available in other areas of the park.

The heart of Santee State Park is the beautiful expanse of Lake Marion, which provides the perfect backdrop for camping, fishing, and water recreation. Beyond the shoreline, the park is filled with a peaceful forest of towering oaks and pines that gives the entire area a quiet, secluded feel. Even though the park sits near residential areas, it still manages to feel surprisingly remote. Visitors often spend their time exploring the hiking and biking trails, casting a line in the lake, or enjoying time out on the water.

One thing worth mentioning is the wildlife you might encounter around the lake. While I was at my campsite, another camper stopped by to give a friendly heads-up after spotting a very large water moccasin near the boat ramp. He mentioned that they usually aren’t seen this early in the season—especially in March—but the warm weather had apparently brought them out sooner than expected. It was a good reminder that while camping at Santee State Park means being surrounded by beautiful nature, it also means sharing the space with local wildlife. Just keep an eye on where you’re stepping near the water and enjoy the wild side of the outdoors from a safe distance.

In the end, this campground is a favorite among RVers, van lifers, and tent campers alike for its beautiful lakeside setting, abundant wildlife, and peaceful forest atmosphere. Many of the sites are nicely spaced, giving campers a bit of privacy while still offering gorgeous views of the surrounding woods and water. Whether you’re settling in for a quiet evening by the campfire, watching the sunset over Lake Marion, or simply enjoying the calm that comes with being surrounded by nature, camping at Santee State Park is a relaxing escape that makes it easy to slow down and soak in the outdoors.
